  • The conversion is slow.

    VP9 is a computationally expensive codec, and encoding it in single-threaded WebAssembly is much slower than a native tool. Long or high-resolution clips are the worst case. Trim to just the part you need first, close other heavy tabs, and expect real time for anything more than a few seconds.

  • The WebM won't play in Safari or my editor.

    WebM support isn't universal, older Safari versions and some desktop editors don't accept VP9/WebM. If you need maximum compatibility, keep the original MP4, or use the general Video Converter to target MP4 or MOV instead.

  • The file didn't get smaller.

    VP9 usually beats H.264 on size, but not always: footage that's already heavily compressed, very noisy, or full of grain can be hard to shrink. Lower the quality dial a step or two and re-run. If it still won't compress, the source is likely near its efficient floor already.

  • Nothing happens on the first click / there's a pause before progress.
