Video is the format everyone needs and nobody wants to upload: the file is huge, it's often personal, and the usual answer is a sketchy site that queues your clip on a stranger's server. These tools flip that around: drop a clip in, watch it process locally with a live progress bar, and download the result. Nothing leaves your device, there's no account, and there's no watermark on the way out.

How WebAssembly video processing actually behaves, so you pick the right tool, the right settings, and the right file size for the job.
An .mp4 is a box. The H.264 or H.265 stream inside it is the content. Some conversions just repackage the same stream into a new box (fast, lossless), while others re-encode the pixels (slower, and quality depends on your bitrate). Knowing which you're asking for tells you whether to expect seconds or minutes.
Trimming at a keyframe lets the tool copy the video stream byte-for-byte, instant and lossless. Cutting mid-GOP forces a re-encode of the surrounding frames so the clip stays playable. If a trim is slower than you expect, it's honouring your exact in/out points rather than snapping to the nearest keyframe.
Halving the resolution barely helps if the bitrate stays high. Dropping the bitrate (or raising the CRF quality number) is what actually shrinks a file. For a compressor, aim for a target size or CRF first and only scale the resolution down when the footage still won't fit.
A GIF has no modern compression and a 256-color palette, so a few seconds of motion can outweigh the source MP4. Keep clips short, trim the frame rate and dimensions, and let the tool build an optimized palette. When you actually want small and shareable, an MP4 or WebM beats a GIF every time.
If the source already holds an AAC or MP3 track, pulling it out can copy the stream directly with zero quality loss and almost no wait. Re-encoding to a different format (say AAC to MP3) trades a little time and fidelity. Choose 'keep original' when the source codec is already what you need.
Every decode, cut and re-encode happens in WebAssembly on your own device. The clip is never uploaded, queued or stored. That's exactly what you want for personal recordings, client footage and anything under NDA, and it's why there's no upload bar and no watermark.
