What is Open Graph?

A plain-English definition, and the tools that work with it.

Definition

Open Graph is a set of meta tags (og:title, og:description, og:image) that control how a link looks when shared on social media and messaging apps. They produce the title, description and preview image in the share card, without them, a shared link often appears blank.

  • The og:image is what makes a shared link show a picture. The recommended size is 1200×630 pixels.
  • Open Graph is separate from your SEO title tag. You can tune the social preview independently of search.
  • Missing Open Graph tags are the usual reason a link shares with no image or the wrong text.
