What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Also known as Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

Definition

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a website usable by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI features, so they can crawl it, read it without JavaScript, and quote it as a source. It overlaps with SEO but optimizes for being cited rather than ranked.

  • GEO and SEO diverge in three concrete places: most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript, retrieval reads your page as isolated fragments rather than as a document, and citation favors specific sourced claims over keyword coverage.
  • The measurable factors come from published research. A 2024 study (Aggarwal et al., KDD) tested content edits across 10,000 queries and found adding statistics, quotable statements and cited sources produced the largest visibility gains.
  • Most of the GEO industry sells citation monitoring, which tracks how often you are mentioned. That is an outcome metric. It cannot fix a robots.txt rule or a client-rendered page, which is where the actual technical wins are.
  • No tool can guarantee a citation. Competition, query demand and model behavior are outside anyone's control. What you can control is whether anything technically prevents you being cited.
