What is JPG (JPEG)?

Also known as JPG (JPEG).

Definition

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to make photographs small by discarding detail your eye barely notices, which is why it's ideal for pictures but poor for sharp graphics, text or transparency.

  • JPG is lossy: each save throws away a little more detail, so avoid repeatedly re-saving the same file.
  • It has no transparency support: a JPG always has a solid background.
  • For photos it's tiny and universal. For logos, screenshots or line art, PNG or SVG look cleaner.
