What is DOCX (Word)?
Also known as DOCX (Word).
DOCX is the standard Microsoft Word document format. It stores editable text, formatting, images and layout, and opens in Word, Google Docs and Pages. It's the format for documents you're still working on. Unlike PDF, which is for finished, fixed files.
- DOCX is editable and can reflow between apps and versions, which is exactly why final documents are shared as PDF instead.
- Convert a PDF to DOCX to edit it, and DOCX back to PDF when it's ready to send.
- It's actually a zipped bundle of XML files under the hood, which is why an odd export can occasionally misbehave.
