If you've shopped for QR codes, you've hit the "static vs dynamic" wall: usually with dynamic presented as the obvious, superior choice, conveniently attached to a monthly subscription. The truth is more balanced. Each type is a genuinely different thing under the hood, with real trade-offs, and the right pick depends entirely on what you're doing. Here's the honest version, with no product being pushed on you.

What a static QR code actually is

A static QR code encodes your data directly into the pattern. When you put a URL into a static QR code generator, that exact URL becomes the black-and-white grid. Scan it, and the phone reads the link straight out of the code itself. Nothing sits in between.

The defining consequence: the code is the data. There is no server, no account, no middleman. Once you've generated and printed it, it will work forever, unchanged, with no dependency on any company staying in business. When someone scans it, their phone goes to that short link, which then bounces them onward to whatever destination you've currently set.

The clever part is that the code never changes while the destination can. Because the printed pattern only ever points at the redirect, you can log into a dashboard and change where that redirect sends people, from your homepage today to a promo page next week, without reprinting anything.   1. You depend on the redirect service staying online. The physical code is useless if the company hosting the short link disappears, folds, or the URL expires. Your printed poster now points at nothing. A static code has no such dependency.
  2. Because every scan passes through a server, dynamic codes can count scans, how many, when, roughly where, on what device. That analytics capability is the real reason services love them, and it's a legitimate benefit if you actually need the data.

One subtle upside for dynamic codes: because they only encode a short redirect URL, they tend to be less dense and easier to scan than a static code holding a long link. If your real destination is a monster URL with tracking parameters, a short redirect produces a cleaner code. (You can also just shorten the URL yourself before making a static code.)

When a static code is the right call

Choose static when the destination is stable and you value independence:

  • Permanent information, a Wi-Fi password, a phone number, a vCard, a plain-text note. These never point at a changing web page, so there's nothing to edit. A Wi-Fi QR code, for instance, is inherently static.
  • You don't want a dependency or a subscription. A static code costs nothing to run and can't be switched off by a third party.
  • Privacy matters. No server sees the scan, so nobody is logging who scanned what and when.
  • One-off or low-stakes prints where reprinting, if ever needed, is cheap.

When a dynamic code earns its keep

Choose dynamic when editability or analytics genuinely matter:

  • The destination will change: a restaurant menu that updates seasonally, a campaign landing page, an event that moves URLs. Editing beats reprinting.
  • You need scan data to measure a campaign, counts, timing, and location trends across posters or products.
  • Expensive or hard-to-replace media, packaging, signage, engraved plaques, printed manuals. The one thing you can't easily reprint is exactly where "edit the destination later" is worth paying for.

The mistake to avoid

Don't reach for a dynamic code out of vague fear that you might want to change the link someday. That "someday" comes bundled with an ongoing dependency and, often, a recurring fee, and if the service ever lapses, every printed code you own goes dead at once. If the destination is genuinely fixed (a password, a contact card, a stable page), a static code is simpler, free, and permanent. Match the tool to the actual need.
