The GigAI Audio Compressor makes audio files smaller without sending them to a server. It targets the two settings that genuinely control file weight: the MP3 bitrate (how many kilobits per second of audio detail are kept) and the sample rate (how many times per second the waveform is measured). Drop a WAV, MP3, M4A/AAC, OGG or FLAC (anything your browser can decode) and it decodes with the Web Audio API, optionally resamples to a lower rate through an offline render, then re-encodes to a standard CBR MP3 in-browser with lamejs. Because MP3 is the near-universal delivery format and its bitrate maps almost linearly to size, this gives you a predictable, honest dial: 128 or 96 kbps for a podcast or voice memo that has to be tiny, 160–192 kbps for music you still want to sound good, and a matching sample rate, 44.1 kHz for music, 22.05 kHz for voice, 16 kHz when you truly just need it small. Common problems, solved

Hit a snag? Here are quick fixes for the issues people run into most.

  • My file wouldn't load or decode.

    The compressor can only handle audio your browser can decode. Most WAV, MP3, M4A/AAC, OGG and (on most browsers) FLAC files work. A DRM-protected purchase, a raw/exotic codec or a corrupt file may not. Try re-exporting the source to WAV first, then compress that.

  • The file didn't get much smaller.

    If the source is already a low-bitrate MP3, there's little left to remove: re-encoding it can even add a touch of size from headers. Compression saves the most on lossless WAV/FLAC sources. Also lower the sample rate for voice, and remember that a very long file stays large at any bitrate. Trim it if you need a dramatic cut.

  • The compressed audio sounds muffled or dull.

    That usually means the sample rate was dropped too far for the content. 16 kHz is fine for speech but strips the highs from music. Re-run keeping the original sample rate and use a higher bitrate (160–192 kbps) for anything musical.

  • The tab got slow or ran out of memory on a very long file.

    Resampling and encoding hold the decoded audio in memory, so a multi-hour recording on a low-memory device can strain the tab. Close other heavy tabs and try again. For the longest files, trim the audio first or compress in shorter sections.

Get the most out of it

  • For speech-only content, 96–128 kbps at 22.05 kHz is usually indistinguishable from the original and a small fraction of the size.

  • Bitrate roughly maps to size, halving the bitrate roughly halves the file, so it's your fastest lever when you need to hit an exact cap.

  • Keep music at 44.1 kHz and 160–192 kbps. Downsampling music to 16 kHz makes it sound dull because it removes the highs.

  • Compress from a lossless source (WAV or FLAC) when you can, re-compressing an existing MP3 or M4A only adds loss on top of loss.

  • Watch the before/after readout: if you're still over your limit at 96 kbps, the file is probably just long. Trim it rather than pushing quality lower.
